Back in town at alma mater Lake Catholic High School yesterday to present a scholarship, Seahawks free agent wide receiver Joe Jurevicius expressed an interest in potentially signing with the Browns this off-season.
In the opinion of this writer, Jurevicius would be just what the doctor ordered for this Browns team. He has incredible hands, is very reliable, and would serve as a great mentor to enigmatic young talents Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow II. Jurevicius is also great in the red zone, which was one of the Browns biggest weaknesses a season ago. Jurevicius scored ten times with the Seahawks last year.
For these reasons, Jurevicius is likely to have several suitors once free agency officially opens on March 3rd. The Seahawks are on the record as wanting to bring him back, and the Patriots and Bill Belichick have also publicly expressed their interest. And now, Jurevicius is on record as saying he is very open to coming back home to play with the Browns next season. While Jurevicius is one of the top available free agent wide receivers, he is not expected to command anywhere near the 6 year/25 million dollar deal the Giants signed Plaxico Burress to last off-season.
In comments to the Plain Dealer yesterday, Jurevicius said "Weirder things have happened. You know places that you'd like to go and if it happens, it happens. I think [the Browns have] a pretty good coach. [Romeo Crennel has] made some great moves and so have the people in the front office. They're making decisions that are going to help the organization out. For me personally, of course, I'd love to come to the team. But I just want to play football."
In separate statements to The News Herald also said the following about coming to Cleveland: "It's definitely crossed my mind. But it's out of my hands. It's up to (the Browns) if they feel I'm the best player for them. If that happens, I'll be happy and it will be exciting to come home."
