Dorssys Paulino, SS-AZL: 2-5, HR (3), 3 RBI, 2 R, K.
Paulino was the Indians big-money signing last year in the international free agent market, agreeing to a bonus of $1.1 million last July. Paulino was born on November 21, 1994, meaning that the 17-year old infielder was born after the 1994 baseball strike, and was an infant when Belle, Lofton, Baerga and co were tearing through the American League in 1995. Think about that for a second...hopefully you all now feel as old as I do. He's a bigger kid than I expected, as he's a solid 6'1, 180lbs and moves pretty well at short. The tool that got him that signing bonus though is his bat, as he's projected to have plus power and a plus hit tool. Paulino is living up to expectations so far, as he's hitting an impressive .325/.402/.575 with 3 HR, 3 triples, 5 doubles and 13 RBI in the Arizona Summer League. Most impressive is his 11 BB and 17 K in 80 at-bats, showing a more advance approach than most international signees at his age. Some scouts who've seen Paulino play believe that he will eventually outgrow shortstop and end up at 3B, but even if that does happen his bat should still play there just fine. It's not a move that is going to pay off anytime soon, and a lot can happen between Arizona and Cleveland, but as of right now Paulino is looking like a pretty good signing for the Tribe.
David Huff, SP-COL: 5 2/3 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 4 BB. Huff gave up 3 HR yesterday, and raised his season ERA to 4.97. For any of you out there still holding on to hope that Huff will bring back anything of value in a deadline deal this year...please stop. You're only kidding yourself.
Tyler Sturdevant, RP-COL: 1 2/3 IP, ER, H, 2 K. Sturdevant gave up a solo HR, but had an otherwise clean outing. It was the best of his three AAA outings this year, as he had allowed 3 ER in 1/3 of an inning in his prior two outings combined. Progress people, progress.
Bryan Price, RP-COL: 4 ER, 2 H, 2 BB. Price allowed 4 ER without walking a batter in his 2nd career AAA outing.
Tim Fedroff, LF-COL: 3-4, 2B, BB, 2 R, K. Fedroff continues to light up AAA pitching, raising his line to .330/.409/.515 in 28 games with the Clippers.
Jason Donald, 2B-COL: 2-4, HR (4), 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, K. Donald has hit in 8 of his last 10, and has a .293/.362/.512 line during that timeframe. He's been playing some OF in addition to 3B and 2B in Columbus, and he's an option to be moved in a deadline deal this year.
Jared Goedert, 3B-COL: 3-5, HR (9), 2 RBI, 3 R. Goedert is in the midst of one of his trademark hot streaks, hitting in 9 of his last 10 with a .378/.410/.568 line. He has an .850 OPS, 9 HR and 37 RBI in 50 AAA games this year.
Matt Packer, SP-AKR: W (1-0), 6 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 5 H, 7 K. It's nice to have Packer back and pitching in the system. He's made 5 appearances this season since coming off the DL, including two in the complex leagues. All in all, he's thrown 17 innings, allowed 11 hits, struck out 16 and walked just one. Oh, and he's yet to allow an earned run.
Preston Guilmet, RP-AKR: S (16), IP, H. Guilmet still hasn't allowed a run since June. His season ERA is down to 1.70.
Rob Nixon, RP-CAR: 4 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB. This was Nixon's 2nd appearance with high-A Carolina since being promoted from Lake County. He had given up 2 ER in 1/3 of an inning last time out, so this was a pretty significant improvemet.
Mason Radeke, SP-LCC: L (5-4), 4 1/3 IP, 7 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 3 BB. This was Radeke's 2nd straight outing with 8 K's, but ge also gave up a pair of HR's this time out. In 65 innings with the Captains, he has a 3.88 ERA, 71 K and 16 BB.
Jerrud Sabourin, 1B-LCC: 2-3, HR (3), RBI, R. The Captains managed just 3 hits as a team last night, and Sabourin had two of them. He's hitting an impressive .324/.511/.441 in his last 10 games, with a HR, a double and 12(!) walks. He was a walk-on at Indiana and then an undrafted free agent signing with the Indians, and you really can't help but pull for him.
Joshua Nervis, RP-AZL: 2 IP, 2 K. Nervis was the Indians 38th round draft pick this year out of Sonoma State. He's thrown 10 innings in the Arizona Summer League, striking out 15 while allowing just one run on 5 hits.
D'Vone McClure, CF-AZL: 2-3, BB, 2 R, K. McClure was the Indians major signing right at the deadline this year, as the toolsy OF out of an Arkansas high school in the 4th round agreed to a well-over slot bonus of $765,000 (slot was $314,700). Yesterday was his professional debut for the Arizona League Indians, and I'd say it was pretty successful.
Josh McAdams, RF-AZL: 2-2, 2B, 3 BB, 2 R. McAdams has hit in 4 of his last 5 games down in the complex leagues, going 7-19 with 3 RBI in that timeframe.
Nelson Rodriguez, 1B-AZL: 1-3, HR (1), RBI, BB, R, K. Rodriguez was the Indians 15th round pick out of a NY, NY high school, and he also signed late in the process for $100,000. He's a big boy at 6'2" and between 225 and 250 lbs (depending on who you ask), and he's got impressive raw power at the plate.
