Week five is in the books and Kent State sits in first place in the MAC East. Ohio continues to win despite the injuries, Miami loses a rough one but remains undefeated in the MAC, and Toledo and Northern Illinois continue to head full steam into their late season showdown.
The TV Game of the Week featured Miami facing arch-rival Cincinnati in the 117th version of the Victory Bell. The Red Hawks came loaded for Bear (cats) taking the kickoff and driving 75 yards in three and a half minutes, capped off with a 19 yard touchdown pass by Zac Dysert to Dawan Scott. Cincy had a three-and-out and Dysert was driving again before tossing the first of three key interceptions. That play seemed to take the air out of Miami’s attack, and the Bearcats took over from there. Final score Cincinnati 52, Miami 14. Miami falls to 3-3 overall while Cincinnati improves to 4-0. Munchie Legaux threw for 157 yards and 2 TD’s, and George Winn rushed for 128 and 2 more scores. Dysert wound up with 303 yards and 2 touchdowns to go with those three pics, Luke Swift led receivers with 67 yards, and Dawan Scott led rushers with 22 yards (on one carry). Miami travels to Bowling Green next week. I for one, am looking forward to STO coverage of the games later this year, FSO did a horrible job presenting this one.
Buffalo travelled to Athens to take on the Ohio Bobcats. Ridden with injuries, the Bobcats have had trouble keeping pace with conference fodder, and Saturday was no different. It took a fourth quarter scoring spree to put Ohio on top for the first time, final score Ohio 38-31. Tyler Tettleton went 14/26 for 183 yards and one touch, Beau Blankenship ran 25 times for 86 yards (1 TD), and Bakari Bussey had 8 catches for 77 yards. Buffalo used a ground attack, gaining 313 yards overland. Devin Campbell ran 160 yards, while Alex Zordich gained 110 more. Zordich also passed for 97 yards and a score. The Cats are still on the outside looking in, carrying the most votes among unranked teams. Ohio improves to 2-0 and hosts Akron next week. Buffalo falls to 0-2 and visits Northern Illinois.
Kent State visited Eastern Michigan, and helped the Eagles remain winless. Spencer Keith threw for 113 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, Trayion Durham rushed for 116, and Dri Archer led receivers with 52 yards and a score. The Flashes improve to 3-0 and travels to Army next week. EMUY drops to 0-2 and gets to play Toledo Saturday.
Bowling Green travelled to Akron to play the Zips, and had all they could handle in the first half. Akron led 10-0 after a second quarter touchdown and field goal. In the second half, the Falcons went to their running game against Akron’s small D and took over. They also covered the Zips receivers like a blanket and held the Zips to one total yard to win 24-10. Anthon Samuel had 117 yards rushing (7.8 avg) with one score to lead the running game. Matt Schilz threw for 180 yards and 2 TD’s to go with one pic. Alex Bayer led receivers with 94 yards. Dalton Williams was 29/50 for 228 yards and 1 TD. Jawon Chisholm rushed for 100 yards. Jerrod Dillard led the receiving corps with 4 catches for 66 yards. Of bigger concern to the Zips is the status of several keep players who went out with injuries. Akron (0-2) hosts Miami next week, while Bowling Green hosts the Red Hawks.
Massachusetts visited Western Michigan in hopes that without starting QB Alex Karder, they might get their first FBS win. Not. Even. Close. Final score WMU 52 UMass 14. Tyler Van Tubbergen threw five touchdown passes and 283 yards while Brian Fields gave ground support to the tune of 71 yards on 11 carries. Jaime Wilson led catchers with 88 yards and a touchdown. The Broncos improve to 1-1 and visit Ball State next week. UMass goes to 0-3 and hosts BGSU.
And last but not least, Central Michigan went to Toledo and lost 50-35. Chipp QB Ryan Radcliff threw for 327 yards and 4 TD’s, but also threw 2 pics. Cody Wilson caught 9 of them for 108. For Toledo Terrence Owens threw for 233 yards and ran for 66. David Fluellen had an even 100 yards rushing, while Bernard Reedy had 92 through the air. Toledo improves to 3-0 and their tour of destruction continues in Eastern Michigan. Next up for the Chippewas is a home game against Navy.
I will guarantee either UMass or EMU will win a game this year; they play each other on the final week. Maybe I’ll make that the Game Of The Week.
