0HRPorchViewMaking the playoffs in baseball is extremely difficult. In the NBA and NHL, more than half of the teams in the league make the playoffs. In the NFL, just six of the league’s 32 clubs make the postseason, but the teams are only required to play 16 games, with nearly a week off from playing a real game in between. In baseball, just one-third of the teams qualify for the postseason and have to manage to remain consistent over a 162-game schedule.

Last season in the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks made the playoffs with a 38-44 record. The Boston Celtics were one game over .500. The 2010 season saw a 37-45 Indiana Pacers team that finished 25 games back in the division standings made the playoffs, along with 41-41 Philadelphia. Last season, in the NHL, one team lost more games than they won and another had a .500 record entering the playoffs. That was in a lockout-shortened season. During the 2011-12 season, the Florida Panthers won their division, despite a 38-44 record.

The three worst winning percentages among MLB playoff teams during a full season are .516, .509, and .506. The 2006 St. Louis Cardinals went 83-78. They won the World Series. The 1973 Mets went 82-79. They lost in the World Series. The 2005 Padres were 82-80. More often than not, it takes 88 wins or more to secure a playoff spot, except for a division winner in a weak division. That equates to a .543 winning percentage over 162 games. That’s a staggering level of consistency.

SwisherFor a time, he was just the New York Yankee that walked into McLaren's and put Barney Stinson's perfect week in jeopardy on How I Met Your Mother. Then, he was the guy who ended Cody Allen's career-starting scoreless streak, spoiling the only game I managed to attend at Progressive Field in 2012. Come winter, he was the target of a "dog and pony show" free agent pitch, one that tried to appeal the inner-Buckeye in the former Yankee. While I wasn't a fan of the measures taken by management to secure his services, in the end, I was glad Nick Swisher was a Cleveland Indian.

2013 09 bad fanAs the calendar has turned from spring to summer to fall, the Cleveland Indians have taken fans on an exciting and amazingly unpredictable journey, one that has the team right in the heart of the playoff race with a little more than a week to play in the regular season.

The Tribe’s unexpected success has brought with it a season-long debate over the team’s attendance at Progressive Field. Media members and bloggers have taken to lecturing fans about their responsibilities to support the team in person. In recent days, the debate has expanded to include speculation on the long-term viability of having a Major League Baseball team in Cleveland.

As we have followed the up and downs of the Indians this season we have struggled to quiet the little voice in our head that keeps asking a question that we are reluctant to answer:

Am I a bad fan?

GomesMessupStep away from the ledge. I know last night was a kick to the gut for you. From 7:00 PM on you were probably feeling pretty upset and torn up. The Browns trade away what most would consider their best offensive weapon, essentially hitting the submit button on the 2013-2014 season. And then the Indians go out an hour later, in a situation where many are hoping they finally latch onto a wild card and bring a sense of hope to a city that is reeling and..

WHO in the blue blazing hell am I kidding? Everyone was talking about Trent Richardson and raising a fuss. It's still the same group of us here watching this team, living and dying with every pitch and play. Let's go.

CarsonWalkoffAll I can replay in my head this morning is, "Who is Karim Garcia..."

Why? Because I keep replaying Matt Carson's hit. Like, who is Matt Carson? Really, we don't know the guy. It isn't a slight on him like "Who is Karim Garcia" is on Karim Garcia. And Karim Garcia might be a fine gentleman.

And we know Matt Carson is, based off what people say. But we don't really know him. All we know is that he came up with one of the biggest hits of this 2013 Cleveland Indians season.

ASTROS - 1 | INDIANS - 2

W: Bryan Shaw (5-3)

L: Rhiner Cruz (0-2)

[BOXSCORE]

So let's learn a little bit about the guy. Didya know he is 32 years old? Did ya? Cause he is. Yeah he's a oldie, but young in major league years. He attended BYU, rawr, cougars.

He was a Yankee draft pick in 2002, in the fifth round. He's from California.

He's a gothic dad, who likes heavy metal... Wait a second here..
