altIt was supposed to be the marquee game of the season for Ohio State -- a stiff test for the second ranked Buckeyes when they faced the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils in Columbus on Tuesday night. What unfolded was just another rout for Ohio State as the Blue Devils folded in an 85-63 blowout.

“Sometimes you just get your butt kicked,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the game. “My butt is sore... I was focused on trying not to lose by 30.”

The Buckeyes were able to dominate Duke in their Big Ten/ACC challenge matchup with a balanced attack offensively. Jared Sullinger led the Buckeyes with 21 points while William Buford added 20, Deshaun Thomas scored 18 and Aaron Craft had 17. While seemingly every Buckeye player that hit the court performed well, Deshaun Thomas was the star. Thomas went on a streak where he hit eight straight shots, almost single-handedly taking over the game during the brief time frame where the contest was competitive.

“I wanted to have a big game for my teammates,” Thomas said. “I was kind of the x-factor today. It was fun.”

The Buckeyes got out to a fast start in the first half. After both teams missed their first three shots, Aaron Craft kicked off the scoring by connecting on a 3-pointer. That sparked an 11-0 run for the Buckeyes that ignited a packed Value City Arena.

meyer.1How you feel about the Ohio State Buckeyes hiring Urban Meyer as its next football coach probably says a lot about how you feel about college football in general these days.

For Buckeyes fans, Meyer's hiring, assuming he's the Meyer of two national championships and not the burned out Dick Vermeil-type that left Florida in the lurch, this is the best possible outcome to the worst possible scenario.

No one outside of the drive-by moralistic hypocrites in the national media who simultaneously scream for an even bigger payday for a national championship while belittling the sordid side of what all that money brings with it wanted to see Jim Tressel leave the Buckeyes.

Braxton_Mich2It had to happen eventually.

Michigan finally ended their seven-year streak of futility against Ohio State with a thrilling 40-34 win in front of 114,132 Saturday in Ann Arbor. Denard Robinson played a near-flawless game at quarterback for the Wolverines, and Braxton Miller’s 335 yards of total offense for Ohio State wasn’t enough to overcome the Buckeyes’ defensive struggles.

The Buckeyes took an early lead at 7-0, and led 24-23 at the half, but Robinson drove the Wolverines to a touchdown following the second half kickoff and the Ugly Hats would not trail after that point. The loss was Ohio State’s third straight as they finish with a 6-6 mark, 3-5 in conference play. Michigan ends the season with a perfect 8-0 home record, and their 10-2 overall mark could land them an at-large BCS berth.

Ohio State-Michigan...The Game...will be contested for the 108th time Saturday in Ann Arbor, and the Wolverines are a touchdown favorite to end their seven-game losing streak to the Buckeyes. The Michigan drought against OSU is at 2,924 days and counting, and they have won just once in the series since 2000.

The attention of Buckeye fans has been distracted during Michigan Week by widely-published reports of an agreement with Urban Meyer to be the next Ohio State head coach. So the disappointment of the 2011 season for the OSU faithful is tempered by the anticipation of a quick return to the sport’s elite, with a proven winner at the helm. Time will tell. Expect a formal announcement by the university as soon as Sunday or Monday.

Do you really want to talk about Ohio State’s latest loss, a 20-14 setback to the criminal entity from State College?

Yeah, neither do I. So let’s not. Let’s, instead, talk about the apparent new man who will lead Ohio State football starting in 2012. It isn’t official yet but it seems cast in stone that by next week Urban Meyer will be the next head coach of the Buckeyes. In terms of prestige and prior accomplishment it’s the biggest head-coaching hire in the history of the program. Paul Brown was a top-flight high-school coach, Woody Hayes was a winner at the O.G. Miami and Jim Tressel racked up four Division I-AA National Championships at Youngstown State. But Urban Meyer has enjoyed ultimate success at the highest level of the sport.
