Jared Goedert, DH-COL: 4-4, 2 HR (6), 9 RBI, 2B, 2 R, BB.
Um, wow. The Clippers scored three touchdowns last night, and converted all three PAT's while the Bucke...er, Clipper defense held the Buffalo Bisons to just a field goal in a 21-3 victory. Goedert led the offensive attack, going single, 3-run HR, double, 3-run HR (those last 2 in the same inning), SAC fly, walk in his 6 plate appearances. Goedert had just 5 hits in the 9 games prior to yesterdays offensive explosion, and no HR's. That changed in a big way against a Bisons pitching staff that included none other than Jeff Stevens, the PTBNL the Indians recieved in the Brandon Phillips trade (Stevens allowed just 1 ER in 2 innings of work). Goedert had his Columbus numbers jump to .286/.324/.603 with 6 HR and 24 RBI in 17 games for the Clippers. He destroyed Eastern League pitching to the tune of a 1.089 OPS in 35 games for the Aeros earlier this year. Goedert celebrated his 27th birthday recently, and is still limited to LF/1B/DH defensively. But if he keeps on putting up numbers like this, and the Indians LF situation continues to dissapoint, there's a chance that he finally gets a shot at the bigs this season.
T.J. McFarland, SP-COL: W (1-0), 7 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 3 K. McFarland pitched well in his Columbus debut, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings, but didn't get any help from the Clippers offense and recorded a no-decision. Consider that problem remedied, as he got more run support last night than most pitchers get in 4 starts combined. There's no evidence that McFarland pitched to score.
Dan Wheeler, RP-COL: 2 IP, 2 H, 5 K. Now relegated to AAA mop-up duty, Wheeler struck out 5 of the 8 hitters he faced last night.
Zeke Carerra, CF-COL: 4-5, HR (2), 3 RBI, BB, 5 R. Leadoff hitters are supposed to get on base and score runs, and that's exactly what Carerra did last night for the Clippers. He's hitting a so-so .259/.306/.348 this season with 8 SB in 12 attempts.
Cord Phelps, 2B-COL: 2-4, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R. Phelps snapped an 0-20 skid with his two hits last night, and is hitting just .255/.329/.412 with 5 HR and 21 RBI in 56 games for Columbus.
Jason Donald, 3B-COL: 3-5, RBI, BB, 3 R. After scuffling in the majors, Donald has been finding success in AAA. He's played 18 games with the Clip Show, and is hitting .328/.430/.507 with a HR and 8 RBI. He's been playing both 3B and SS, and still projects as a solid utility infielder at the big league level.
Gio Soto, SP-AKR: W (5-2), 5 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 4 BB. Both of the runs Soto allowed were via solo homers. He lowered his season ERA to 4.22, and has 54 K and 20 BB in 59 2/3 IP for the Aeros.
Kyle Landis, RP-AKR: 1 2/3 IP, 4 K. Landis runs his scoreless streak to 6 2/3 innings, during which he's struck out 12(!) and allowed just two hits and issued two walks.
Bryce Stowell, RP-AKR: IP, H, K. Stowell has made 5 appearances since coming off the DL, and so far so good. He's worked single innings in all 5 of those outings, and allowed just one earned run. He has struck out 7, hasn't walked a batter and given up 4 hits. Now he just needs to stay healthy and on the mound.
Tim Fedroff, CF-AKR: 2-4, HR (3), RBI, R, K. Fedroff hasn't been lighting up the Eastern League the way he did last year, but is still hitting a solid .312/.403/.452 with 3 HR, 5 3B and 9 2B. He's 10 for his last 26 with 7 RBI in his last 6 games.
Trevor Crowe, RF-AKR: 2-4, 2 1B. Yesterday was Crowe's 1st game off the DL, and he banged out a couple of hits for the Aeros while playing most of the game in RF.
Nick Weglarz, LF-AKR: 1-4, 2 RBI, BB, K. Wegz is slumping again, hitting just .219/.350/.375 in his last 10 games. At this point, if the 25-year old can ever contribute at the big league level, I'd be thrilled.
Chun Chen, DH-AKR: 1-3, 2 BB, R. Chen has brought his OPS up about 20 points in the last couple of weeks, but is still stuck on 1 HR for the season.
Juan Diaz, SS-AKR: 2-5, R, 2 K. Back down in AA after a stint in the show, Diaz came up with a pair of hits and a pair of strikeouts last night.
Tyler Sturdevant, RP-CAR: 2 IP, H, BB. Sturdevant finally made his first appearance of the season yesterday, throwing two scoreless innings for the Mudcats.
Tony Wolters, 2B-CAR: 2-4, 2B. Wolters has cooled off after his hot month of May. He's gone just 3-19 in 5 June games, with a double and an RBI.
Justin Toole, DH-CAR: 2-3, 2 RBI. Toole drove in the only two Mudcat runs last night with a 2-run single in the 9th.
Carlos Moncrief, RF-CAR: 1-3, 2 BB, R. Moncrief is hitting .242/.340/.438 on the season with 6 HR and 8 SB. I'd love to see who has a better arm, the converted pitcher Moncrief or the Indians 1st round draft pick Naquin.
