Recap: Mayweather - De La Hoya

Last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather proved to the world he is the pound for pound king. There is no debate.

"Pretty Boy" Floyd won a split decision over a very game Oscar De La Hoya in what turned out to be a very close fight. One judge had the fight for Oscar 115-113 and the other two gave it to Mayweather with scores of 116-112 and 115-113.

Mayweather was able to fend off the much bigger De La Hoya who was probably 20 pounds heavier when they stepped into the ring last night. The lightning quick Floyd was able to stick and move which he is famous for. His defense kept him out of harm's way all night as he avoided almost everything De La Hoya tried to throw at him. To Oscar's credit, he never really got frustrated as we have seen fighters due against the silky smooth Pretty Boy. The moral of the story was, speed kills.

Floyd Mayweather was able to stick to his gameplan the entire fight. He landed a solid shot or two and then backed away from Oscar. There were a few rounds that were very difficult to score and could have gone either way. De La Hoya did dictate the pace as he was pressing Floyd for all of the twelve rounds. In doing so, he was peppered with pin point shots. Niether one of the fighters was ever hurt in the fight. In the last two rounds you could start to tell de La Hoya's ego was bruised.

With the victory, Floyd Mayweather is now the WBC 154 pound champion. He has now won 6 titles in 5 weight classes. He has said that this was going to be his final fight and he stuck to that after his win. I have to be selfish and hope this isn't the case. Floyd Mayweather is the best fighter I have ever watched in my lifetime.

On another note I have to give credit to two of the judges, the two who scored it for Floyd. De La Hoya was cleary outclassed in the fight. The crowd was very very pro De La Hoya. Those two judges didn't let the crowd factor into their scorecards like it seems the other judge did. When I watching the match, I was thinking that it would be hard not to give a close round or two to the Golden Boy because the crowd was amplifying his every punch.

Will this mega-fight save a sport that is in a tailspin right now? I don't think it will hurt the game by any means. For the true boxing fan, yesterday was like a holiday. We actually got to see two of the sports true icons go toe to toe.

The next two months are going to determine a lot of what is in store for the "sweet science." There are a handful of excellent matchups coming soon that will re-energize not only my love for the sport, but also the casual boxing fan.

Overall, I look at last night's fight of a preview of what's to come. Good solid boxing from some of the best athletes in the world. It was a very entertaining evening, and I expect to see more of it in the coming months.
