Misc Boxing/MMA Boxing Archive Mayweather Dominant In Knockout Of Hatton

Forget the current pound for pound king crown.  That's been his for a while.  It's time to start talking about Floyd Mayweather as one of the greatest fighters of all time.  Last night Floyd took apart scrappy (and previously 43-0) Ricky Hatton before a raucous pro-Hatton throng at the MGM Grand in Vegas.  The Spoon Man recaps the fight and also hits on last night's UFC card at the finale of "Ultimate Fighter". The pound for pound king lives.

Last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. simply outclassed Ricky Hatton. Floyd proved why he is the best in the world, and the best that I have ever seen for that matter.

Hatton came out and looked to bully Mayweather with his usual dirty tactics. Holding and hitting, punching behind the head, and hitting on the break.  Most of this would bother a run of the mill fighter that Hatton is used to fighting, but not "Money" Mayweather.

It took Floyd a round or two to adjust to the style of Hatton. Mayweather settled in about midway thru the third round and then showed everyone why he is considered one of the greatest of all time. He landed body shots with speed and accuracy. Punches to the head were snapping Hatton's head back. It was all just a matter of time. Hatton never came close to hurting Floyd in the fight. Mayweather on the other hand, was picking Hatton apart with a number of shots.

In the tenth round Mayweather seemed to land every punch he threw. He was like a surgeon in the ring. Taking Hatton apart, taking his will to fight and go on. Mayweather continued to land and knocked Hatton down. He was able to get to his feet and was very wobbly.  Floyd went in for the kill, landed even more punches and referee Joe Cortez saw enough and stopped it.

Once again, I saw no flaws in the game of Floyd Mayweather. If anyone thinks there is a better fighter in the world today, they are kidding themselves. He is simply amazing between the ropes and will go down in history as one of the best fighters ever.

Watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the highlight of the night hands down. There will some real low points inside the MGM however. The biggest was many of the Hatton fans booing the National Anthem of The United States of America. Simply classless and disgusting.

The undercard was almost as bad.

Jeff Lacy looked terrible in a win over Peter Manfredo Jr. who has no business fighting on a pay per view card. Daniel Ponce de Leon also looked average in his victory over Eduardo Escobedo.

There was also a UFC event in Las Vegas last night. The finale for Season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter took place down the road from the MGM inside the Palms.

The main event on this card didn't disappoint fight fans either.

Roger Huerta showed why he's the real deal in the UFC lightweight division. He kept his winning streak alive with a submission victory over a tough Clay Guida.

Guida was clearly winning the fight after two rounds. He was able to score takedowns at will and was landing good strikes. Huerta appeared frustrated but has the heart of a champion and never quit fighting.

In the third round Huerta landed some good knees to the chin of Guida that rocked him. He continued the assault, got Guida's back and sank in a beautiful rear naked choke. Guida was forced to tap.

The fight of the evening and possibly of the year was a battle between John "War Machine" Koppenhaver and Jared "J-Rock" Rollins. These two fighters went at it back and forth for the entire fight. Both guys were a bloody mess and actually turning red from all of the blood between them that was everywhere.

"War Machine" pulled off a miraculous win after he appeared gassed and hurt. Rollins had him in full mount and was dropping bombs. That didn't stop him from going for broke, switching positions and then ending the fight due to strikes from the top. What a great performance by both fighters.

The title of Ultimate Fighter was on the line along with a six figure contract in a bout between Mac Danzig and Tommy Speer.

Danzig came out and dominated Speer who seemed to be out of his league. Mac took him down and pounded him and forced Tommy to give him his back. Danzig easily sank in a choke and took the fight via rear naked choke.

Another great night for fight fans everywhere. Anytime you get to see the best in the business in any sport, it is a real treat.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was once again very impressive and Ricky Hatton showed he isn't anywhere near a top pound for pound fighter. Style makes fights as they say and Floyd has a ton of it. He came to ring with Born in the USA blaring and was wearing Ohio State colors. There was no chance he was going to lose.

The UFC card was fantastic as always and I am looking forward to UFC 79 in just a few weeks.

As both a huge boxing and mma fan, I only have once wish from Santa, don't let there be a UFC event on the same night as a really meaningful boxing match.

Happy Holidays to all.
