The Ultimate Fighting Championship made a very successful debut in Australia, hosting its first ever event in front of 16,000 plus fans. All of the fans there got to see a great night of action highlighted by a few surprises.
The main event was another showcase of future heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. He destroyed yet another opponent, this time it was mixed martial arts legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. I am one of the few people that think Noguiera has seen his better days and doesn't have that much left in the old gas tank.
Velasquez used a much improved standup game to finish the fight early. He landed a few perfect shots that ended the evening of fights just two minutes into the opening round. Nogueira never had a chance and he was the one that looked outclassed. Look for Cain to be fighting for the title in either his next fight or two fights down the road.
The first one was George Sotiropoulos and how good he looked over a very tough fighter in Joe Stevenson. He dominated the entire fifteen minutes and scored a very easy and one sided decision.
Sotiropoulos showed a very nice standup game to go along with his top of the food chain ground game. If he continues to improve and be as technically sound as he was last night, we have a new contender on our hands.
The other surprise was Chris Lytle winning his fight by and taking home the submission of the night bonus. Lytle is a solid fighter and I'm not shocked that he won, it's the manner in which he won. Lytle is a guy who comes to bang and loves to trade. His last few fights have been fight of the night candidates and it was strange to see him making somebody tap out. His win came via knee bar in the first round.
