Last night at Wolstein, the Vikings held of Youngstown State 58-54, to win their seventh game in a row, all in the Horizon league. With Wisconsin-Green Bay also winning last night (at home over Valparaiso), CSU's win keeps the Vikes within a game (plus the tiebreaker) of the coveted second seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Wisconsin-Milwaukee came into the Wolstein Center last night without the services of their leading scorer, Tone Boyle, and were facing a Viking team that's on a roll right now. So it was no surprise when CSU rolled to a large halftime lead. But the Panthers fought back, and gave the Vikings a second half scare before finally succumbing and running out of gas. Cleveland State is set to host the Wisconsin schools, Milwaukee on Thursday and Green Bay on Saturday, in the final home stand of the season. The Vikings (17-8, 8-5) are on a four-game winning streak and have pulled into a fourth place tie with Wright State in the Horizon League, just a game behind Milwaukee for third and three games back and within striking distance of second place Green Bay. From that first night of the year when Cleveland State eked out a three-point home win over Greg Kampe's Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, films of CSU games have told opposition coaches one thing more than any other: play a tight, sluffing zone against the Vikings, and you'll have an excellent chance to win. A winning strategy most nights against the Vikings, but not this night, thanks to freshman guard Jeremy Montgomery, who allowed the Vikes to sneak out of the UIC Pavilion with a stirring 66-63 victory.
