When you commit eight penalties, give up two turnovers, drop passes all over the lot and still win a football game on the road over a ranked opponent, you’ll take it. Ohio State didn’t exactly bring their A-game to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday afternoon against Iowa. But thanks to some timely defense and a gut-check late drive directed by Terrelle Pryor, the Buckeyes were good enough to spirit away a tingling 20-17 victory over the hard-luck Hawkeyes. With one week left in the regular season- Michigan Week- hopes for a share of the Big Ten title and a probable BCS bid are still very much alive for the Scarlet & Grey.

Hawkeye Pierce: After trading punts with the Buckeyes on the teams’ first possessions, Iowa got down to business late in the first quarter with an impressive eight-play, 87-yard touchdown march. Ricky Stanzi got the Hawkeyes going with a clutch 15-yard completion to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos on 3rd-and-13 from his own ten and went on to hit on three-of-three on the drive, including the 19-yard touchdown strike to Marvin McNutt that gave Iowa a 7-0 lead with 1:05 left in the opening period.

Stanzi, the kid from Mentor who missed last season’s overtime thriller in Columbus with an injury, started fast with completions on eleven of his first twelve attempts. He was greatly aided by the early play of Iowa’s offensive line, which controlled the Buckeye front and opened up running lanes for backup tailback Marcus Coker, who slashed for 47 yards in the first period as Adam Robinson, suspended for the quarter, rode the bench.

Iowa_OSU2010eOhio State scored the last ten points of the game, including the go-ahead touchdown with 1:47 remaining, to beat Iowa 20-17, and stay alive in the Big Ten title chase. Dan Herron pounded it in from the 1-yard line to put the Buckeyes ahead to stay, after Terrelle Pryor had kept the game-winning 76-yard drive going with a 14-yard scramble on a 4th-and-10 play.

The win keeps Ohio State (10-1, 6-1) tied atop the Big Ten with Michigan State and Wisconsin, both also victorious on Saturday, and sends the Buckeyes into Michigan Week with The Game still meaningful in the conference race. Iowa (7-4, 4-3) lost for the fourth time this season on an opponent's touchdown drive in the game's final minutes.

altBy the end of the game, most of the Buckeye starters were watching from the bench as Ohio State defeated UNC-Wilmington 81-41.

Ohio State (3-0) dominated the game defensively from the initial tip-off until the final buzzer. The Buckeyes held UNC-Wilmington (2-2) to their lowest scoring output, and lowest shooting percentage of the young season. The Seahawks were only able to connect on 18 of their 57 field goal attempts (31%), in addition to turning the ball over 19 times.

Scoring was hard to come by in all aspects of the game as UNCW was held to just 18% on their three point field goal attempts (3-16). When they tried to feed the ball down low, they had to deal with Dallas Lauderdale, who had five blocked shots in 21 minutes of action.

Meanwhile, the Ohio State offense used a balanced attack to push the game out of reach early. No Buckeye player scored more than 17 points in the game, while five different Buckeyes reached double digit point totals. Ohio State was led by freshman Deshaun Thomas, who came off the bench to score a team-high 17, while collecting seven rebounds. Two other Buckeye freshman, Jared Sullinger and Jordan Sibert, chipped in 11 points. Ohio State shot 45% from the field, and collected 16 assists on their 29 made baskets. They also out-rebounded the Seahawks 47-24 in a game that was never really close.

It's a date that has been circled on the calendar for months now, as the rematch of the game that decided the Big Ten title a year ago. The Buckeyes travel to Iowa City Saturday to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in a game that's still meaningful for both teams, but perhaps not as the dramatic spectacle many of the experts predicted at the start of the season. Both teams were ranked in the top ten in August, and November 20 loomed as the potential showdown between the two Big Ten favorites. Best laid plans, and all that...

Not only did someone forget to send the memo to the Wisconsin Badgers and the Michigan State Spartans, but Iowa (7-3, 4-2) managed to drop three close games on the way to the showdown. No. 9 Ohio State (9-1, 5-1) is still fighting for at least a share of the conference championship and a possible BCS bowl invitation, but they too have stumbled in their quest for a championship season.

altThe BCeStimation is a weekly column that predicts which 10 teams will make it to the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl and National Championship game.

Last week's slate of games forced some shuffling in this week's BCeStimation, but if that upsets you, then you're probably on the wrong ride kind sir... or kind madam, because I'm sure there are a ton of women tuning in on a week to week basis to see who I think will make it to the BCS. I'd imagine there are about as many women reading this article as there are wins left in Joe Pa's career. That gives us, what, maybe two or three female readers?

Back to football, the Buckeyes almost politely excused themselves from this article with their poor first half performance against Penn State. Watching the first 30 minutes of that game made me feel like I was watching Wisconsin, part deux. To make matters worse, Brent Musburger said the word "moxie" when describing Penn State quarterback Matt Mcgloin about 48 times too many during the game. It's as if Brent had spent the entire week torturing the word "moxie" in his basement and decided to pay tribute to his victim by saying his name over, and over, and over again.

So I'm dedicating this article to the word "Moxie", in remembrance of a normal word that was brutally murdered by Brent Musburger last week. A moment of silence please...

Now to the predictions:
