I was peppered with emails today from fans waiting to hear Mansfield's take on Sunday's disaster, and in it, he unloads on one man and one man only for the atrocity that is the Cleveland Browns. Phil Savage. Mansfield reminds us that it was Phil who left the overmatched Romeo Crennel and Franderson in their posts. It was Phil who was given the reins, THREE YEARS AGO, to fix this mess. Mansfield says Phil MUST GO ... and that Randy Lerner needs to back the Brinks' Truck up to Bill Cowher's home in the Carolinas.
Today there is no analysis. There is no break down. There are no X’s and O’s tactical observations. There are no takes about who did and didn’t play well. What’s the point? I was so distraught I just got hammered yesterday. I couldn’t put my two index fingers to the keyboard after that latest embarrassment. I just had another beer until I didn’t care anymore. I am disgusted.
Phil Savage must be joking. Seriously. He must just be sitting in Berea laughing right now at how he keeps pulling this off. I read the fan boards and Phil still largely gets a free pass. The venom is aimed at the hapless Charlie Frye and the deeply confused Romeo Crennel, who is sounding more and more like Chris Palmer every day. These two men shouldn’t be held to such derision. They are but two “good guys” who are completely over their heads and unqualified to be doing what they are doing. The man responsible is the one who has them in their positions, but he somehow skates. About the only man in the organization who pulls the wool over more fans eyes is the defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham. His defense gives up 200 yards rushing in the NFL with a completely healthy team and allows four touchdowns through the air, but because he yells at people and looks all “intense” people think he’s doing a great job. I mean for real, how do y’all pull this off in
