wisniewskiConsider Brendan Shanahan’s actions as the new NHL Dean of Discipline as shots across the bow. This week’s shot may have actually hit the bow of the SS Blue Jacket. With James Wisniewski’s eight regular season game suspension for a late hit on Minnesota’s Cal Clutterbuck, the Blue Jackets will now have to patchwork together their defense following training camp.

I will openly admit that I have not watched the video of the hit. To me, it doesn’t matter. I have read the description of the play from various media outlets and well-respected journalists on Twitter. The facts are simple in this case. It was a late hit with an accompanying headshot on an unsuspecting player. The Blue Jackets and Wisniewski can spin this story any way that they want to and it’s perfectly within their right to do so. Wisniewski is a two-time previous offender, including another eight-game suspension. The stigma attached to these players will not be ignored.

A lot of Browns, a lot of Thome and a lot of Buckeyes talk in this edition of The Weekend Wrap. From a tremendous 'Thomecoming' Friday to a last minute win engineered by the Browns on Sunday, it was a pretty good weekend in Cleveland sports. That's not to say I find it impossible to find some flaws....

carterpresserSome familiar faces are still around in the state capital, but it is the new faces that will have to carry the flag for the team this season if they wish to make the playoffs. The Columbus Blue Jackets enter the 2011-12 campaign with a lot of optimism and with good reason. Offseason acquisitions of Jeff Carter, James Wisniewski, Vaclav Prospal, and Radek Martinek have made this the strongest group the Blue Jackets have had in the franchise’s history. One new face whose fate has yet to be determined is that of Ryan Johansen and he could be the key to the season for the team.

mccoy_and_hillis_indy_tcfDon’t dismiss the fact that the Browns went on the road and beat a wounded Indianapolis team for their first win of the season. When you’re the average-looking skinny kid at the dance, you dance with whoever asks and you enjoy it.

After all, it was almost a week ago to the hour that we were complaining about a home loss to a team that appeared to be in worse shape than the Browns. You can’t complain about a home loss and also complain about a road win regardless of how choppy or sloppy it may have been. NFL wins are to be enjoyed. Especially when it evens the season record and puts you into a tie for the division lead. Especially when you’re still watching a young team work through major philosophical changes on both sides of the ball and especially when it makes next week’s game at the stadium relevant as opposed to desperate.

"Nothing new”.

That’s what my 10 year old daughter said as we watched Cedric Benson run 39-yards untouched on 3rd and 3 late in Sunday’s Browns-Bengals game.

I've decided to provide my kids cigarettes and booze instead of subjecting them to more Browns and Indians abuse. I honestly think Marlboros and Wild Turkey would be better for their long-term health.

Personally, I had one overriding thought as I watched that crap-tacular: Thank you God for the wrecked knee. Seriously. I appreciate the dislocated knee cap and the inability to walk from lot to stadium. Otherwise I would have had to spend more time and more money to watch that shit and I would have potentially been compelled to throw myself in front of an RTA train on the way back to the car after confronting how stupid I am.

Benson’s run referenced above basically ended the ballgame and it ended a seemingly unending array of Cleveland penalties and Bengals rushing yards in the opener for both teams but the Browns wasted no time showing their youth and their lack of discipline. They piled up seven penalties in the first quarter alone as they fell behind 13-0 in the first half. Some of the penalties were the garden variety and some were more exotic. An example of the latter was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Browns bench when someone on the sideline knocked over the line judge.

Yep, the entire team and coaching staff was running around out of control early on. For the day the Browns rang up 11 penalties for 72 yards.

The biggest lack of discipline occurred late though. The Bengals offense somehow got off a play with the Browns still in their defensive huddle and backup QB Bruce Gradkowski hit rookie AJ Green who was open by 20 yards for the go ahead score. That play ruined an otherwise other-worldly day for Browns CB Joe Haden who was all over the field.
