brownsfront7Since the reincarnation of the Browns in 1999, the one criticism that has constantly been levied against them is that they are a team without an identity, which is really just a euphemism for saying that they stink in all phases of the game. Aside from possibly the almost-magical 2007 season (sometimes dreams do come true), the Browns really haven’t had a season in which they’ve been, you know,  “good” at anything; their identity has always been that they don’t have an identity.

The real trick when writing about the Cleveland Browns is how to extricate yourself from the numbing sameness of it all, again in order to force the fingers to Browns-Ravenspush keys as you struggle to say something, anything remotely new. Watching the Browns lose to the Baltimore Ravens Sunday was to essentially watch the tape from the previous week’s debacle against Miami and try to invent a new angle. It was cruel but not unusual.

Sure there were differences, subtle at best, between the two games. The overarching themes were exactly the same. No greater lessons were learned about this wretched team. Just initial impressions solidly confirmed.

Does it matter if Brandon Weeden doesn’t start at quarterback? (Part 1)

Starting quarterback Brandon Weeden had an MRI on his sprained thumb this week and his status for Sunday’s game against Minnesota is still in question.

“We’re really waiting on Brandon to kind of see where he’s at and make the determination in the next few days,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said. “I’m going to keep all our options open right now. Obviously we have two options, and that’s Jason (Campbell) and Brian (Hoyer) both.”

Normally not having your starting quarterback available would be a problem, but with the way the Browns have played through the season’s first two weeks, it may not matter who is under center.

2013 09 browns ravens previewThe Cleveland Browns travel to Baltimore on Sunday to take on the Ravens.

It will be the home opener for Baltimore, which means they will be unveiling their Super Bowl banner and celebrating last season’s victory in front of the home fans.

Yeah, that’s going to be a laugh riot for the Browns.

Barring something strange happening, one of these teams will walk out of the stadium on Sunday with an 0-2 record on the season.

Let’s try to figure out who it will be.
