WrapI just spent the worst week of deer gun hunting season of my life. Weather was fine, property was fine, the people I was with were more than fine, but there were simply very few animals moving around. When you sit in a tree for a week and don’t even bring the gun to your shoulder it gets tiring, frustrating and physically and emotionally painful. That said, even the worst week of deer hunting beats a good week of work…. Or watching the Cavs and Browns play and the Indians ‘build’ toward their 2013 season.

running-after-dollarl-255The first public week of picking via the new ranking system went sufficiently, giving birth to an 8.5-4.5 record (the Atlanta-Tampa game was halved).  But, like John Henry, my machine was outdone by a human, in this case BT, who managed his best week of the year at 9.5-3.5.  DJC, after taking a convincing lead, sputtered a bit at 6.5-6.5.

For the year:  DJC - 87.5-83.5, Chris - 86.5-84.5, BT - 85.5-85.5.

Yes, now everyone is .500 or better against the spread.

BT pointed out to me how sad it was that we are only a collective 6 games over .500 at this point in the season, and how we would be living off of rat parts and public fountain water if we were counting on our choices to find us a fortune in Vegas.  I countered with the fact that we are a collective 35 over .500 in the last 5 weeks.

So perhaps it just takes half a season to get a decent bead on the NFL.  Or perhaps that's just a pipe dream too, which is why the sidewalks of southern Nevada are paved with gold (and shattered knee caps).

2012 12 browns raidersFresh off their win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns head west to take on the Oakland Raiders.

The Browns are still looking for not only their first road win since Week 2 of last season, but their first winning streak since Weeks 2 and 3 of last year.

The game against Oakland is the first of a three-game stretch that includes Kansas City (currently 1-10) and Washington (5-6) against teams that are nearer the Browns in ability. If the Browns can take care of business, suddenly things look better than they did when the team started the season 0-5.

Lose during this stretch and ... well, let’s not think about that right now.

MissAmThere has been an outpouring of hundreds - nay, tens - of requests to begin posting the weekly results of my NFL ranking system, HERO (Hutchison Enigmatic Ranking Output), and it would be a fool thing for me to disoblige.  So, here they are.

To explain without really explaining, the system ranks teams by record, points scored, and points allowed (along with other secret factors like Head Coach Mustache or Mascot Stupidity) and produces a completely impartial bipartisan ranking that has absolutely nothing to do with any personal feelings that I might have.

For instance, the Browns are ranked 24th, which is clearly higher than I personally would rank that hot mess, but simple number crunching says that I am letting my complete and utter disdain for their coaching staff cloud my logic.  Apparently this team, hampered as it is by the worst Coach in the History of Sports (perhaps I embellish slightly), still has enough talent to be ranked ahead of a full quarter of the league.  This team could be in for good days if they finally hire a quality football dude.

bill willis stance poseIn a way, it’s not fair. When one reviews the career of a sports icon who helped break the color barrier in American society, the temptation is to focus on his race, and the life and times in which he lived. This is natural; that was the tense and dangerous crucible in which he displayed honor and dignity.
