2013 09 browns beat bengalsThe Cleveland Browns rode a defense that is getting better by the week to a 17-6 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The win is the Browns second in a row and, coupled with Baltimore’s loss in Buffalo, leaves the Browns tied for first place in the AFC North with the Bengals and the Ravens.

The Browns took a 7-0 lead with 2:13 left in the first quarter on Jordan Cameron’s fifth touchdown reception of the season on a two-yard-pass from quarterback Brian Hoying.

For the day, Cameron had 10 catches for 91 yards and, though four games this season, has already surpassed his career total in receiving yards (360 this year vs. 259 career yards) and receptions (30 this year vs. 26 coming into the year), clearly thriving in Norv Turner’s offense.

It turned out that those seven points were enough, as the big story of the day was the Browns defense, which continues to get better and, in the process, is giving the rest of the division a heads up that it is no longer going to be a day off when they face the Browns.

2013 09 browns bengals previewThe Cleveland Browns return home to take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Browns are coming off a last-second victory in Minnesota over the 0-3 Vikings that set the town a buzz with (Brian) Hoyer Mania.

Can Cleveland kick off of a stretch that will see them play three consecutive home games in the span of 14 days with a win and reach the .500 mark for the first time since Week 4 of 2011?

Let’s try to find out.

BrownsvVikingsWho was the only genius - or slightly non-retarded male human - that picked the Browns on the road last week?  That's right.  Got one right for once.

I wish I could feel as good this week, but the Bengals are a MUCH better team than the Angry Norwegians.  Brian Hoyer can't go out there and throw 3 terrible picks again and hope to win.  And I still don't have enough faith in him to expect him to improve that much in his second week.

If he does and he wins, then that's the end of Brandon Weeden in Cleveland.

Let's be honest, Weeden is already done after this season is over.  But if Hoyer were to pull out a victory, I don't think you could find anyone that would disagree with turning the team over to him for the remainder of 2013.

Don't see that happening, though - take the Striped Endangered Species to cover the 4.5.  Everyone back in the tank.

HoyerApparently the Browns can't even lose right.

Despite knowing that losing is probably the best thing for this franchise long-term, I couldn't help but enjoy the win.  The game was fun to watch, the feeling of victory was satisfying.  And knowing that Cleveland has a better record than the Steelers is just heavenly.

But enjoy it while you can - there probably won't be a ton of these.

I know, I know, here I am taking a huge dump all over the parade.  But their weaknesses aren't going to go away, and they will keep this team from making any kind of serious run - they don't have a run game and they don't have a QB.  We're still looking at 5 or 6 wins, kids.

2013 09 browns gordon equation copyCleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon made one heck of a debut on Sunday in his return from a two-game suspension handed down by the NFL.

Gordon pulled in 10 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown in the Browns win over Minnesota. He was also the main reason the Browns were able to pull out the victory even though the rest of the offense was as ineffective as ever.

In the lead-up to Sunday’s game, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Browns would be open to trading not only Gordon but also fellow wide receiver Greg Little. ESPN contributor Adam Caplan followed that up by reporting that Gordon has been available for several weeks and that Browns CEO Joe Banner wants him gone – preferably sooner than later.

But then on Monday Jason LaCanfora reported that it would be “shocking” if the Browns actually traded Gordon.

“We have no plans on any other trades,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said on Monday.

So what to make of all this?
