2013 11 campbell byeWhile the rest of the AFC North spends the weekend getting beat up, the Cleveland Browns are enjoying their bye week while gearing up for what have unexpectedly turned into an important final seven games of the season.

The Browns find themselves at 4-5 and just on the outside of the final playoff position in the AFC. While a 4-5 record is generally not something that should get fans overly excited, it’s different with this year’s Browns team.

While the record may not currently reflect it, the Browns seem better than a 4-5 team, especially when you consider how bad their offensive numbers are. Heading into this weekend’s games, the Browns are:

  • 26th overall on offense;
  • 26th in points per game;
  • 30th in yards per play; and,
  • 29th in third-down conversions.

Oh, and each of the three quarterbacks on the roster have started at least two games this season. And that fact goes a long way toward explaining a large part of the offensive struggles.

CarSeatINT. CAR – DAY

Trevor is driving his tan Oldsmobuick down the street, his 13 year old son, Chad, sitting next to him.  Sheila sits in the back seat, gnawing on a hunk of beef jerky and seemingly oblivious to the uncomfortable silence in the car between a father who doesn’t know how to talk to his teenage son anymore and a teenage son who is perfectly happy to sit in silence.

Trevor:  So… how’s school?

Chad:  Fine.

Trevor:  You like your teachers?

Chad:  They’re fine.

Trevor:  Any of them you like more than the others?

Chad:  Uhhhhh… not really.

2013 11 browns defense week 9A week after Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton proclaimed that the defense had turned a corner, it appears that he may be right.

And if he is, it could mean a final seven-game stretch that could push the Browns into the playoffs.

Following Sunday’s win over Baltimore, when the Browns held the Ravens to just 278 total yards (and just 55 on the ground), the Browns find themselves near or on top of the defensive rankings, a place that they have not occupied for a long, long time.

Browns-Ravens 2There's no way, a day after snapping one of the more embarrassing losing streaks in franchise history, to definitively say if the Cleveland Browns are a franchise on the rise. But after dominating the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, 24-18, there's at least enough reason to believe that this might be the case.

This Browns team at this moment isn't exactly a playoff contender but neither is it the woeful doormat it's been for years. And if that's the only conclusion to draw from Sunday's victory that's still better than the conclusions Browns have been used to drawing on a typical in season Sunday evening.

2013 11 browns beat ravensThe Cleveland Browns beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, 24-18, the Browns first win over the Ravens in 12 tries.

And they have Ray Horton and the defense to thank for it.

The game turned into one that showcased why the Browns brought Horton to town to oversee the defense, which deserves a lot of credit for making sure the Browns walked off the field late on Sunday with an actual victory rather than yet another moral victory.

Cleveland jumped out to an early lead 14-3 lead thanks to two touchdown passes from Jason Campbell to Davone Bess, who bounced back nicely after his dismal day in Kansas City.

For the game, Campbell was 23-of-35 for 262 yards and three touchdown passes. Most importantly, for the second consecutive week he did not turn the ball over. And that was huge because, after that second touchdown pass, the offense went into hibernation until it was almost too late.
