Speed kills. Being the best defensive fighter in the business isn’t so bad either. Floyd Mayweather Jr. showed again why he the best boxer in the world. “Money” dominated a guy in Shane Mosley that many thought was going to give some problems. He did that for one round and Floyd took over the fight.

Shane Mosley did do something we have never seen before. He landed some hard shots in round two and had Mayweather hurt. Floyd appeared rocked on two occasions but never went down. Mosley put everything he had into finishing the fight and couldn’t do it.

The mega-fight boxing fans were supposed to be treated to in 2010 was Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. Politics and disputes over drug testing got in the way of that and put the showdown between the top two fighters in the world onto the back burner. The entire boxing world hopes to see that monster matchup before the end of time.

cozzone_mayweatherVSmosley_weighin0208Shane Mosley is the main beneficiary of Manny Pacquiao declining the fight with Floyd Mayweather. He gets to step in with the best in the business and show people he is still at the top of his game at the age of 38. He has all the tools needed to be the first boxer ever to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather comes into the bout at 40-0 and has dominated just about everyone is his path. Many people still say he hasn’t fought anyone.  Floyd is easily the best defensive fighter of this era and possibly of all time. His style sometimes can make for less than exciting fights but his flash and arrogance can make up for what is lost in that area. If you like speed and accuracy, then you must be a “Money” Mayweather fan. Defense wins championships, as they say, and Floyd is a perfectionist when it comes to slipping punches and rolling his shoulders to stay out of harm’s way.

Shane Mosley has gotten better with age and has beaten some of the toughest fighters in the world. He hasn’t fought in over a year and many people believe the ring rust will be a big factor for a guy his age as well as the fact that he is fighting the lightning quick Mayweather.  Mosley is always in great shape and physically and mentally prepared. I don’t see the layoff being that much of a factor.

These two fighters simply don’t like each other. That should add to the excitement of this fight. Personal jabs have been taking place for months now and both guys feel they deserve more respect from the other. There is no better way to get respect than to go into the ring and earn it.

When this fight was first announced I really wasn’t that excited due to the fact that it was Mosley in there instead of Pacquiao. A few months has changed my mind and I think this bout could be the fight of the year. Two ultra-quick guys with a ton of skill that hate each other. There isn’t much more to ask for than that. Add in another possible huge payday for the winner and that helps the cause as well.

I have always been a big Mayweather fan because of his defensive style. If he does what he has always done and blocks a ton of shots, I don’t see anyone being able to penetrate his guard and hurt him. Both fighters have said they are going for the knockout in this fight and if that is true, that could open the door for a Sugar Shane upset.

Mosley needs to bring the action in this fight and be more aggressive than he has ever been if he wants to shock the world. His hand speed and power and top notch and he has the tools to beat Floyd. If he gets sloppy and over aggressive then Floyd could pick him apart to win a lot of rounds.

I really am expecting a hard fought, highly competitive fight between the two of the best fighters in the world. There are a few unanswered questions that could easily turn the tide of this fight in a hurry. I’m eager to find out the answer to those questions tonight.

When I preview this fight I can’t help but think Mosley will be the first to make a mistake and Floyd will make him pay. Say what you like about Mayweather but he is one of the smartest boxers ever to lace up a pair of gloves. He takes advantage of every possible opportunity when it presents itself. I think he does it again this evening and either wins a unanimous decision or pulls off a late round knockout.

One thing I do know for sure, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao should be fighting. If Mayweather wins tonight, I don’t see any possible way that it doesn’t happen in the next few months. There is way too much money to be made and it would do wonders for the sport of boxing.

Shane Mosley has the chance to derail that money truck from being delivered. I can’t wait to see if he can do it. Tune in and find out for yourself.

stpierre111Last night at UFC 111 a few debates were settled. One of the better cards that have been put together recently produced a really solid night of fights.  Those fights also answered a few debates.

Georges St. Pierre is easily the most dominant fighter in the world today. He proved that yet again by winning every second of all five rounds with top contender Dan Hardy. GSP never let Hardy throw his heavy hands and that kept him out of harm’s way the entire fight.

All five rounds were the same and Hardy never had a glimmer of hope. GSP shot in for a takedown about five seconds into every round and Hardy had no answer. Hardy showed a ton of heart when he was almost submitted two times from arm bars and refused to tap out. Frustrated all night, Hardy easily could have quit due to frustration but he hung in there twenty five minutes with the mixed martial artist in the world.

ufc_111_poster2010 has been a pretty big bust in the world of boxing so far. The same cannot be said in the for mixed martial arts. Fight Fans have seen one great card after another.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is holding its second event in less than a week and will have a stretch of four events in twenty one days. UFC 111 takes place in the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and in my opinion has the makings of the best event out of the bunch.

Any card that has the best pound for pound fighter Georges St. Pierre on it, has the makings of something special. He is simply the best all around fighter in the game and is must see TV. The scary thing about GSP is that he gets better every time he gets into the octagon.

Dan Hardy has what seems to be almost impossible task of dethroning the welterweight title holder tonight. Hardy is a fierce striker that many people are saying doesn’t deserve a title shot. I disagree with those opinions.

Hardy is a young entertaining fighter that talks and sells a great game. He has also backed all of that up inside the cage and that’s what matters most to the brass at the UFC. The one punch knock out power of Hardy has to be a concern to anyone, not just GSP. He has proven to have a very solid chin also which will help his cause.

Do I think Dan Hardy will win? No. Do I think he has some of the tools to present problems and give St. Pierre a run for his money? Absolutely. GSP was stunned by a huge underdog way back in April of 2007. Matt Serra took the title from him and essentially created the monster that Georges St. Pierre turned into. He has rattled off six fantastic performances in a row, all against the best guys in the business.

MannyLast night in Dallas, Texas the third largest crowd in the history of boxing showed up at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. What they saw was supposed to be the biggest fight so far in 2010. What they got was one of the worst pay per view cards in a long time and a main event that was a horrible letdown.

Manny Pacquiao dominated Joshua Clottey for twelve rounds in what was one of the easiest victories in Manny's great career. Clottey just showed up for a paycheck and basically took 8 of the 12 rounds off. Many of the rounds Clottey was in single digits as far as punches thrown. Manny on the other hand, threw over one hundred punches in a lot of the rounds and showed the monster crowd why he is one of the popular figures in the world of sports.

Every round was the same. Pacquiao push the pressure on Clottey, landed some good shots to both the body and head while Clottey covered up and did nothing. On the few occasions where Clottey threw punches, he landed some thru the defense of Pacquiao and could have gotten into the fight. In what was easily the biggest fight of his career, Joshua Clottey decided to take the night off after dancing his way to the ring. What a letdown.
