"Schindler's List", "The Downfall", and "Letters From Iwo Jima". Three phenomenal movies, all of which focused on World War II from a non-United States viewpoint. In "Defiance", Mitch says we now have another film that we can add to that sub-genre. Starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber, the film relives an excellent (and true) story from WW II, told briliantly by director Edward Zwick ("Blood Diamond", "The Last Samurai, "Courage Under Fire").

The Oscars have been announced, and the wailing you are hearing are all the fanboys going ape about the fact that "The Dark Knight" wasn't nominated for Best Picture. In this week's Crystal Ball, Mitch gives our readers his take on the Best Picture selections and ommissions. Season #7 of "24" is now off and running, and Jack Bauer is up to his usual tricks despite a disappointing "Bauer Body Count" of just 1 through the first five hours of the show. If past is prologue, we know its only a matter of time before that number starts rising. Clint Eastwood has stated that he is "probably" retiring from his distinguished career in front of the camera. If true, then "Gran Torino" will be his final performance as an actor ... and Mitch thinks it will go down as one of his most memorable roles in a career that was filled with them. In the film (also directed by Eastwood), Clint plays disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski, who sets out to reform his neighbor, who tried to steal his prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.
